Mary’s Story
At just eight years old, Mary* has faced more hardship than most adults. Living in a caravan with her mum and siblings after fleeing abuse, her life has been turned upside down by instability and uncertainty. As Christmas approached, she confided in her social worker that she was scared Santa would not know where to find her this year.
Her mum’s struggles with mental health meant that even putting food on the table was not guaranteed. The family desperately needed support to break free from fear and rediscover hope, and that is where Go Beyond stepped in.
When Mary arrived for her Christmas break, her eyes lit up at the sight of the Centre’s twinkling lights and festive decorations. Slowly, her worries began to fade as she rediscovered her confidence and joy. Despite the frost, she loved being outdoors with her new friends, running through fields during orienteering and exploring Sherwood Forest, which felt like a magical winter wonderland.
At bedtime, Mary was not used to sleeping in a quiet room, but our team gently helped her settle and reassured her that she was safe. A cosy bed, new pyjamas and a handmade quilt offered comfort she had not known in a long time, helping her finally feel calm and secure.
Her week was filled with laughter, baking, festive crafts, pantomimes and the joy of sharing a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. At the End of Week Celebration, she proudly showed everyone her creations. It was the Christmas she had been wishing for.
“Mary is leaving Go Beyond not only with amazing memories, but with new friends and the knowledge of somewhere safe, caring and attentive to her needs. This Christmas break has given her the gift of hope.” – Mary’s Break Leader
Mary left Go Beyond feeling safe, valued and full of festive joy, carrying with her the confidence to trust again and the priceless memory of a Christmas filled with hope.
