From a young age, Alex* experienced a very complicated and unsettled home life, witnessing domestic violence and alcohol abuse, often left to care for his two younger siblings. Alex is now under a child protection plan, but his past experiences have greatly impacted on his confidence.
Alex was referred onto a Go Beyond Break by his teacher who said, “An opportunity for freedom, fun and some laughter should help him to reset his confidence in the world and his own abilities. He finds it difficult to interact with his peer group, a Go Beyond Break should give him the chance to experience playing and having fun and hopefully realise that having real friends and taking part in new fun activities is something he is capable of and will enjoy.”
When the children arrived on the break, Alex appeared to be the quieter member of the group. He would only speak when spoken to and was reluctant to join in with the activities. Thanks to your help, throughout the week the Break Leaders could not believe the transformation they saw.
The Break Leaders provided many opportunities for him to make friends and step outside of his shell. He was encouraged throughout the week to join in with everything from building sandcastles on a trip to the beach, to games on the field, and trampolining competitions. A particular highlight for Alex* was building the campfire. He was a natural and his newfound confidence in his own abilities soon saw him supporting and encouraging the rest of the group before toasting marshmallows and loudly singing campfire songs. He had become a different person, chatting away, laughing with the other children, and cheering everybody on.
After a week filled with fun and lots of laughter, the Break Leaders said, “It was hard to believe that this was the same child who had started the week! Alex had been transformed from a quiet, shy young person at the beginning of his break, to someone who was louder, brighter and more confident”.
Back at school, there has been a noticeable difference in Alex’s* confidence. Just a week away from his daily struggles was exactly the boost he needed to grow his confidence both in himself and to join in with the other children.
