Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and able to enjoy being a child.

But for many of the children we support, life is shaped by uncertainty. Changing routines, unstable home environments, and responsibilities beyond their years can leave them feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

For children like Alfie*, a Go Beyond break offers something different. A steady place. A chance to feel safe. And the opportunity to experience moments of joy that might otherwise feel out of reach.

Through a residential break, we give children the time and space to step away from daily pressures and simply be themselves.

When Alfie joined us, his life was full of uncertainty. At just 11 years old, he was helping care for his brother while also experiencing challenges within his family and living without a stable home. With secondary school approaching, the idea of yet another new environment left him feeling anxious and unsure.

At the start of the week, Alfie was quiet and withdrawn. He stayed close to adults and found it difficult to join in with other children.
Over the course of his break, that began to change.
He took things at his own pace
With gentle encouragement from the Breaks Team, Alfie slowly began to feel more comfortable, joining in when he felt ready and building trust in the environment around him.

He tried something new
A few days into the break, Alfie found the confidence to try rock climbing. Nervous at first, he pushed himself to keep going, supported by the team and cheered on by the other children, until he reached the top.

His confidence grew
That moment made a difference. Alfie began to realise that new experiences didn’t have to feel overwhelming, especially when someone was there beside him.

He connected with others
As the week went on, Alfie began to relax. He joined in more, made friends, and found moments of laughter and belonging.

A sense of safety to take forward
By the end of the week, Alfie left with new friendships, happy memories, and a feeling of safety he could carry with him into what comes next.

Moments like these matter.

Research shows that even short periods of safety, consistency, and connection can have a lasting impact for children living with chronic stress. These experiences help children feel calmer, build confidence, and begin to see that positive relationships and environments are possible.

For many children, this is the first time they have felt this kind of stability.

There are thousands of children facing similar challenges. Their lives are often unpredictable, and the support they need is not always there.

At Go Beyond, we provide that safe place. A space where children can feel cared for, supported, and part of something that feels like a family.

Thank you for everything you have made possible so far. Your support allows us to continue providing these life-changing breaks for children who need them most.
