Ivy’s Story

Ivy’s Story

For the last four Christmases, Ivy* has sadly experienced the festive period without her dad after he passed away suddenly. Ivy’s excitement for Christmas trees, presents, and yummy food was replaced with anxiety and constant stress over being away from her mum and the possibility of losing her too.

When she arrived to Go Beyond, Ivy’s homesickness and anxiousness initially overwhelmed her and she was reluctant to engage with the group. However, the very kind children and caring Break Leaders on her break soon helped Ivy to settle in and feel more comfortable.

With their support, Ivy slowly started to rediscover her Christmas spirit. A festive film night, a delicious roast dinner, and joyful decorations gave Ivy the happy Christmas memories that she sorely missed. A particular highlight for Ivy was trying ice-skating for the first time. Despite some apprehensiveness at first, the encouragement of the other children gave her the confidence to glide across the ice. Once Ivy realised she was in a safe, supportive environment to try new things, she was able to let go of her worries and enjoy the company of young people like her.

On Thursday night, Ivy enjoyed a cosy evening around the firepit making s’mores, singing Christmas carols, and eagerly chatting over hot chocolate. It was a very special moment that showcased how Ivy had really blossomed throughout the week and felt comfortable in her surroundings. Reflecting on the week, Ivy expressed:

“Go Beyond is amazing, friendly, and supportive!”

At the end of the week, and with a present from the Go Beyond team in tow, Ivy returned home with confidence, new friends, and a revived love of Christmas. Your support means that each week, we can give young people like Ivy rest, support, and hopefulness for the future.
