Tara’s Ice Cream Moment

The hunger gap is about more than food. It’s about childhood.

For children living in poverty, the summer holidays can mean losing more than school. They can mean losing the security of regular meals, routine, and support.

When Tara isn’t at school, life becomes even harder.

Living in an overcrowded home with her parents, grandparents and siblings, daily life is a struggle. Money is tight, space is limited, and simple things many of us take for granted, like having a hot shower whenever you need one or knowing there will be regular food on the table, are not always guaranteed. During term time, school provides stability, support, and a hot meal each day. But when the summer holidays arrive, that safety net disappears.

Like millions of children across the UK, Tara faces the reality of the holiday hunger gap. Without free school meals, families already struggling with the rising cost of living are pushed even further. Feeling overlooked and forgotten, Tara began to withdraw and struggled to manage her emotions. She needed a break from the pressures of everyday life and the chance to simply be a child.

Thanks to Ice Cream Moments, Tara was able to attend a free Go Beyond break. For a week, she didn’t have to worry about where her next meal was coming from or the challenges waiting at home. Instead, she enjoyed nutritious meals, made new friends, got creative in the Arts and Crafts Barn, and experienced the care and attention every child deserves.

One sunny afternoon, after a day of laughter, friendship and fun, Tara sat enjoying an ice cream by the coast. In that moment, she wasn’t worrying about food, money, or the pressures of home. She was simply a child enjoying summer.

That was Tara’s Ice Cream Moment.

By the end of the week, Tara was calmer, happier, and more confident. Her teachers were amazed by the difference, seeing a kind, thoughtful young person who finally had the chance to shine.

Because sometimes, something as simple as an ice cream can mean so much more. It can be a moment of hope, belonging, and the reminder that someone cares.

This summer, donate the cost of an ice cream and help create more Ice Cream Moments for children like Tara. Because every child deserves a summer filled with joy, not worry.
