World Refugee Day was designed by the United Nations to respect and honour refugees, and to celebrate the strength and courage of those who have been forced to flee from their homes, their countries, and their lives to escape conflict or persecution. This global day looks to share stories, build empathy, and promote understanding for those rebuilding their lives.

The theme for this year’s World Refugee Day is: Together we heal. Together we learn. Together we shine. We would like to share the stories of three young people who have faced serious challenges in their lives and joined us on a break that lasts a lifetime.

Together we heal

Jamal* and his family had been refugees in the UK for a number of years before he joined us on a break. Jamal’s family were part of the Syrian relocation project and they arrived with very little to help support their family. Which is why a break with Go Beyond was especially important for Jamal!

Shawn* referred Jamal for a break giving particular importance to Jamal’s isolation from others his own age, and while on break Jamal quickly made a strong bond with one of the other boys, and they spent much of the rest of the week together. One Break Leader said they both seemed surprised that they found a friendship so strong, and did well to support each other throughout the break.

Together we learn

Daluchi* and her family were waiting to hear from the UK Government about their residency in the UK, which restricted Daluchi’s opportunities to join community groups and interact with other children.

While on break she found it very difficult to settle at night due to homesickness and disturbed some of the other children. However, after conversations with the Break Leaders and the other children, she realised she was safe and started to enjoy herself more. She soon slept soundly!

Together we shine

Samira*, a young carer, joined us on a break after experiencing so much change and uncertainty. Jemma* referred Samira for a break because her family fled their home due to a war in their country.

Her favourite parts of the break were playing on the beach, arts and crafts, and horse riding! One Break Leader said she was very supportive of others who were not as naturally talented as her at archery. Go Samira!

Our break leaders saw a light that shines very bright in Samira, and they enjoyed watching her grow in confidence and excitement throughout her week.
