Nine-year-old Connor* has faced more challenges in his young life than most people could ever imagine. Not only has Connor beaten cancer, but he has also recently been diagnosed with developmental delays and autism. He also unfortunately has a difficult home life being a young carer to younger siblings as his parents manage the needs of his sister who has violent outbursts.
As a result, Connor’s emotional wellbeing has been severely affected. He desperately needed a break from his overwhelming responsibilities and challenges. This is where Go Beyond came in, a place where Connor could get the true respite that he deserves. Despite his difficult background, Connor was full of confidence and kindness from the moment he arrived. Connor loved getting stuck into all of the activities on offer, such as building magnet towers in the lounge and playing football in the sports barn. Connor’s kind nature meant that he always included everyone, making sure every other young person had a good time.
Connor especially enjoyed going to Matlock Farm and spending the day in the sunshine. He loved petting rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as bouncing on the jumping pillow where he excitedly wanted to jump as high as possible! Throughout the week, Connor’s experience of caring for others was regularly seen by both the Break Leaders and other children on his break. Connor easily formed new friendships as he was always polite, friendly and made sure that no one ever felt left out. Connor would be the first to help the Break Leaders with tasks like tidying up and carrying everyone’s water bottles.
Connor’s break has made a significant difference, often telling the Break Leaders how much he appreciated his time at Go Beyond and he could not be more thankful for the experience. Indeed, Connor’s week was jam-packed with new activities, new friends and the time to truly be himself.
Connor’s constantly cheerful attitude on his break made it clear how much he needed to let go of his overwhelming responsibilities and showed the importance of being able to spend time having fun with other children. Connor is leaving Go Beyond knowing that life can be filled with fun, joy and playfulness, and we are ecstatic that he had such a
wonderful time.
