Saffron’s Story
At just 12 years old, Saffron has had to grow up far too quickly. She’s a young carer for her mum, who is a recovering addict and a survivor of domestic abuse. When she first arrived at Go Beyond, she was quiet and anxious, weighed down by responsibilities no child should have to carry. On top of everything, Saffron lives with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), which makes mealtimes incredibly difficult. Her mum worried she wouldn’t eat during her stay and packed her bag full of “safe foods” just in case.
But something magical happened at Christmas.
When the children gathered around the table for our festive meal, I saw Saffron’s eyes widen as I brought out the roast turkey, golden potatoes, and colourful vegetables. She hesitated at first, clutching her fork nervously.
Then one of the other girls passed her the bowl of roast potatoes and said, “You have to try these, they’re the best bit!” Saffron smiled shyly, took one, and slowly began to eat. One bite turned into another and before long, her plate was empty and her laughter joined the others’ around the table.

Later that evening, the children huddled around the fire pit, toasting marshmallows and talking about their favourite parts of the day. Saffron told me quietly, “I’ve never had Christmas dinner before. This is the best Christmas ever.” Her words melted my heart.
By the end of the week, Saffron’s confidence had blossomed. She joined in with games, sang carols, and even helped me in the kitchen to make pudding for everyone. When her mum came to collect her, she was astonished, the bag of “safe foods” was still untouched. Instead, she went home with new recipes, new friends, and a memory she’ll treasure forever.
Moments like Saffron’s first Christmas dinner are made possible because of you.
For many of the children who come to Go Beyond, our Christmas meal isn’t just food on a plate. It’s a symbol of safety, belonging, and love a moment where they can simply be children, surrounded by warmth and joy.
This Christmas, as the children gather at one of our centers once again to share laughter, stories, and delicious food, I’ll be thinking of you and the magic you’ve helped create.
Because of your generosity, children like Saffron can go home not just with full tummies, but with hope in their hearts.
